KUALA LUMPUR — Prime Minister Narendra Modi has described Tamil language as a link between India and the world, while addressing the Indian diaspora in Malaysia on Sunday. “India has the strength of its diversity and Tamil is a perfect example of this,” he said at an event to celebrate India’s cultural diversity, adding “this language (Tamil) will bring not only India but also the world together.”
Modi addressed a large crowd of expatriates, countries students and community leaders, saying Tamil, one of India’s oldest languages, has played a remarkable role in civilization exchange and it had an imprint on the minds of Indians living outside India. He said the language symbolises the everlasting contribution of Indian civilisation to global culture. Pointing to Tamil literature, philosophy and arts, the Prime Minister cited it as an example of a cultural ethos that pervades across boundaries.
Modi also praised the Tamil diaspora for excelling in various aspects of social, economic and educational domains in Malaysia. He added that he was confident that the diaspora would also serve as cultural ambassadors and cement the India and South East Asia engagement.
The Prime Minister’s address comes as India moves to strengthen its ties with Indian communities around the world and promote Indian languages and culture. In recent years, the capital has tried to project classical Indian languages like Tamil to the global stage by propping up cultural institutions and diaspora networks. Tamil, which is one of the classical languages of India, has a rich history spanning over 2000 years.
Malaysia has one of the largest population of Tamil descendants outside India and Indian subcontinent, The Kulitalai Tamil Sangam was established in Kuala Lumpur many more local branches structure among its ethnic Indian community such as in various parts throughout country. Modi, during his speech in Bahrain, had encouraged the diaspora to keep their linguistic tradition alive and involve new generations in preserving the culture. He also highlighted how technology and education are playing a vital role in keeping diaspora communities connected India’s linguistic moorings.

It included cultural performances and community engagement in Kuala Lumpur, representing the dynamic presence of Tamil culture in Southeast Asia. As part of his outreach to the diaspora at large, Modi met Indian community leaders and discussed joint programmes for cultural and educational exchange.
